HAM spelled backwards
High-Altitude Hike in the Shadow of the Murder Wall
We took the elevated gondola up to Männlichen from Wengen and then walked down to Kleine Scheidegg for lunch. In the background you can see the Eiger, Mönch, and Jungfrau mountains (English translation: the ogre, the monk, and the maiden/virgin). According to legend, the maiden is protected from the ogre by the kindly monk, hence their imaginative names. According to Wikipedia, since 1935 at least sixty-four climbers have died trying to climb the north face of the Eiger, earning it the German nickname of the Mordwand, or “Murder Wall.”
